TED TALK: Ken Robinson says schools kill creativity

Everybody has an interest in education – something that goes deep with people. Education is meant to take us into this future we can’t grasp. Unpredictability.
“Creativity now is as important in education as literacy and we should treat it with the same status.”
Kids will take a chance – not frightened of being wrong. If you’re not prepared to be wrong, you will never come up with anything original.
Educating people out of their creative capacities. Grow out of creativity – educated out.
Every education system worldwide – same hierarchy of subjects – bottom is the arts.
Education system is predicated on the idea of academic ability.
Hierarchy – most useful subjects for work.
Academic ability – Unis design the system in their image.
Many creative people think they’re not – from school
Suddenly degrees aren’t worth anything – not guaranteed a job.
Structure of education is shifting beneath our feet.
Intelligence – Diverse – think about the world in all the ways we experience it – visually, sound, kinesthetically, abstract terms, movement.
Dynamic – intelligence is interactive.
Creativity – the process of having original ideas that have value – more often than not comes about through the interaction of different disciplinary ways of seeing things.
Distinct – Jillian Lin, dancer and choreographer, multi-millionaire – thought she had a learning disorder (ADHD), 1930’s, specialist – radio, dancing to the music. Couldn’t sit still. Had to move to think. Needed an environment with music to learn.
Rethink the fundamental principles on which we’re educating our children. Won’t work for the future.
The gift of imagination – use it wisely, seeing our creative capacities for the richness they are. Educate their whole being.

My thoughts:
Worldwide the education system is built on a hierarchy that is predisposed towards the most useful subjects for getting work.

Suddenly we now see how creativity is as important in education as literacy, and the structure of education and the way we learn is starting to shift.

Now we see different ways of learning – eg: learning through movement, environment with sound.
