Looking at how communication design can empower design students to recognise their individual learning potential through the creation of an environment that provokes an inspired response.
Current education system is created for the majority – we are taught a particular way and are made to learn the same as everyone else. This leads to stress and misunderstanding for some students. Not everyone learns the same way – we become stressed when we don’t understand something or feel overwhelmed by a task. This has substantial physical and psychological repercussions for an individual. If we can challenge current learning practises and identify ways to encourage engagement in learning environments that is inspiring and creates a personalised learning experience for an individual, then we can prevent the feelings of stress and anxiety felt and instead empower students to take their learning experience into their own hands, and revisit the content in a way appropriate to them.
Ultimately, for students to gain control over their learning to prevent/limit misunderstanding and stress and provide them with ways of creating a positive, engaging learning environment.
Social Learning – Albert Bandura – Organisms do not have to experience certain events in their environment to learn effectively. Rather, they can learn just as much by observing what happens to someone else in a given situation – Observational Learning. Importance of the social context of our learning, much of what we learn depends on our interactions with other people around us.
Stimulating environments can affect brain function in a positive way at any age.
Pressure from inter-personal stressors – feel you might not be able to deal with the situation and control the stress . Once this cycle starts, it tends to feed on itself. Preventing this cycle for students by providing ways to deal with the situation and control the stress through creating an engaging environment that enhances the individuals learning potential.
Change our attitudes and behaviour towards learning – resulting in better understanding and a more relaxed and inspiring response.
Where does music come into this?
Through music, we can create an inspiring environment that encourages students to recognise their full potential and help break down the current education system that mostly does not include creative and musical aspects. Music is proven to have many benefits for an individual, including improving productivity, creativity and overall wellbeing. From before we are born music is instilled in us from our mother’s heartbeat, and throughout life is present in nearly everything that we do. Different genres of music help to relieve stress and enhance or change our mood/emotions at a particular time. We listen to music appropriate to a particular situation and if used in a positive way this can provoke an inspired response. Music is just one aspect that can help form an engaging learning environment – this can also be achieved through engaging all of the senses, and creating a sensory experience that encourages individualised learning.
